Brandy

One day Bear and I went to a doctor's office and as we were checking out at the desk, there was a discussion going on behind the desk.  Upon arriving at work that morning, the staff had discovered a husky female running free on the highway next to the office.  To prevent her from getting hit by a car, they had locked her in one of their cars and then started doing a little detective work.  She did have tags, her name was Brandy and they determined that the owner had moved, left no forwarding address and that the dog's vet had no idea how to contact the owner.

One woman said,"Well I would take her, but I already have two dogs."  Another said, "I'd take her but I have three dogs."  Another said "I'd take her, but I have SEVEN dogs!"  Bear and I looked at each other, knew what we were both thinking and I said "Well I have about 30 dogs and I'll take her!"  Bear put Brandy in his car and off we went.

She behaved beautifuly on the ride home and we put her in my boarding kennel until we could decide what to do next.  She did stay for several weeks.  Bear took her out to play on leash, but we thought better of letting her loose in the yard, thank goodness.  Eventually, my sister mentioned to me that she had been thinking about getting a dog, so I told her about Brandy.  Soon after that, she picked up Brandy and has had her ever since.

There were some rough times when Brandy escaped and ran through the neighborhood.  Even more frightening was the time she escaped in New York City.  Margie attended the Episcopal Seminary and took Brandy with her for the years she was there.  Everything went well until the day when they were in a fenced yard so Brandy could play with all her dog friends.  A woman came to the gate to talk to one of the dog owners and opened the gate to stand there and talk.  Brandy just zipped by her to be running loose in the big city!  It seemed hopeless.

A few hours later, there was a telephone call to Margie's Delaware home answered by her daughter.  Someone had caught Brandy and called the number on her tag to arrange her return.  It turned out that Brandy had navigated her way across TWO Avenues!

Now back in Delaware, Brandy still comes ot board once in a while.  Margie and I sit on the front porch and let her play in the yard with some of my dogs.  Margie says she is the best dog she's ever had.
